Best Beaches on the Isle of Harris for a Peaceful Escape

The beaches of Harris are famous for good reason. They stretch out in long pale ribbons, washed by clear turquoise water that looks almost tropical on brighter days.

The beaches of Harris are famous for good reason. They stretch out in long pale ribbons, washed by clear turquoise water that looks almost tropical on brighter days. Yet what surprises most visitors is how quiet many of them are. Even in summer you can find wide open spaces with barely a footprint. Staying at Finsbay Cottages gives you access to these beaches while keeping you tucked into a peaceful part of the island.

Luskentyre is the one that appears in photographs around the world. It is every bit as beautiful in person. Wide sands, shifting light and the hills of North Harris rising beyond the water. Arrive early or late in the day for the quietest experience. The morning tide often leaves patterns on the sand that draw your eye along the whole bay.

Scarista sits further south and feels more open, with steady Atlantic waves rolling in long lines. It suits long walks and relaxed afternoons. You can sit near the dunes and feel the breeze change direction as the tide moves out. On clear days the colour of the water feels almost unreal, changing from deep blue to pale aqua in the space of a few metres.

Horgabost has a gentler feel. The curve of the bay creates a sheltered patch of water that suits family visits or slower afternoons. From the right angle you can see the islands across the Sound of Harris, adding a sense of depth to the view.

For a quieter experience, head to Borve or Seilebost. These beaches offer the same clear water and soft sand but with fewer visitors. The light here changes quickly, creating long reflections across wet sand as the tide recedes.

The walk out to “The Temple” at Northton, follows the coast from Northton Beach past little sandy coves to the Temple. It’s often quiet in these coves, as there are so many other beaches to chose from near the road, they’re often overlooked. Many of the beaches back onto common grazing land, so dogs must be under control at all times.

The drive from Finsbay to these beaches is part of the experience. You pass lochs, hills and open stretches of coastline that build anticipation before the sand even comes into view. After a full day outdoors, returning to a cottage with a warm kitchen, comfortable rooms and stillness outside the window finishes the day perfectly.
